The scholarship is named after Franco Lalama, the stepfather of a friend Ken met through his volunteer experiences in Costa Rica. Mr. Lalama lost his life on 9/11 leading the evacuation of Port Authority engineering offices in One World Trade Center. The goal for the scholarship is $10,000; the current total is $5,000 thanks to money from The Voluntourist and donations from Mr. Lalama’s friends and family. All of Ken’s earnings from The Voluntourist are going back to the places and organizations where he volunteered.
